Portland's batting duo punish Poole

Simon Proffitt hit 105 and Callan Laws 57 as Portland Red Triangle put in a powerful display at the crease to take all 20 points in their County Division One clash with Poole Town Seconds at Reforne. Poole put Portland into bat but the decision did not pay off as Portland claimed their third win of the season thanks to their superb efforts with the bat.

Portland’s opening duo of Ray Emery (14) and Laws capably negotiated the away side’s opening bowlers before the runs began piling on. Emery was caught by Aryan Mehta with 36 runs on the board, and 19 runs later Chris Leake (12) was trapped lbw by Sam Crisp (1-72).

Portland captain Matt Randell was bowled for one run but Laws had continued to edge towards his 50, clinching it before he was bowled by Manav Kathpalia (1-23). However, Laws was then replaced by Proffitt who stayed at the crease for the rest of the innings to seal a superb century.

Poole then faced a tough challenge to chase down the score as it was but found Kyle Sloane immediately baying for wickets. Sloane (3-32) trapped opening batsman David Spencer (0) with just one run on the board, before Proffitt caught Karthik Subramanian (6) from a Sloane ball with Poole having posted 34 runs.

Poole then got trapped on 39 runs as they conceded three wickets without posting a run with Randell (3-39) taking two wickets and Sloane taking another. However, the partnership of Richard Harrington (70) and Kathpalia (46) gave hope to Poole, posting 118 runs to boost Poole to 157-5. Harrington was bowled by Matt Barrett (2-57) however and from here the wickets fell steadily as Portland sealed the win.

Portland captain Matt Randell was pleased with how his side performed after being put into bat. Randell told Echosport: "We got put into bat and the pitch looked a little bit like it could bend early on. We managed to get through that nice and early, their bowlers were keen to bowl and make an impact early on but our batsmen managed to see off the opening bowlers and we managed to cash in from there."

"To score 272 when you have been put into bat is always positive. It was good, it was nice. A few other people got some runs which was nice. Callan Laws got 57 odd and Si had a 100 which was quite nice for some other people to start chipping in some runs."
